Small Spaces, Big Ideas | Finding the Perfect Sofa

A little while ago I wrote a blog for Urban Barn about my couch and all it’s amazing condo versatility goodness. If you haven’t read it yet, you should. Here’s the link, you now have no excuses! Living in a small space definitely presents its own set of design challenges, but with a little ingenuity, and outside the (condo) box thinking, you too can have that perfectly functional space you’ve been dreaming of.  So, since I’m so nice, I’ve rounded up a few of my favourite double duty furniture pieces to help you get the most out of your little box in the sky.

First up, sofas! There are so many different options and configurations with sofas now, the possibilities are endless. And gone are the days of committing to a sectional while renting a condo, unsure of where you’re going to be living in a year’s time, or whether the sofa will function properly in your new space. So let’s chat about my three favourite sofa designs of the moment!

For those that live in a super itty-bitty condo with an equally small living space, but love the idea of a sectional, my sofa from Urban Barn is the perfect concept. A simple switch of the ottoman, and you can have a right sectional or a left facing sectional. Or you could even take the ottoman away, and you have a full sofa perfect for those overnight guests. There are other versions out there with the same design concept, but the ottomans even offer storage. I don’t know about you guys, but living in a little condo, I’m over the moon happy with any place I can get a little more storage in my space.

For the lucky individual whose living space can fit a sectional on the larger side, but still doesn’t want the lifetime commitment of locking themselves into an orientation, there are options for you too! In fact, I was faced with this exact design dilemma when helping my brother design his rental living room. He had lots of space for a full sectional, but due to the renting lifestyle, he wasn’t willing to take the plunge. Which meant getting a sectional that can detach from itself, giving you the option of laying it out to suit your needs, but also separating it completely and having two couches for the price of one! Plus, with such amazing quality, and the oodles of versatility, this sofa from Gus* is one they’ll be able to keep forever. What better investment?!

And of course, there’s the dreamiest sofa design for all those overnight guests, that turn your living room into their bedroom. This next sofa is definitely not the pull-out couch your parents had - but maybe we just like our in-laws more now? This ingenious design from Blu Dot allows you to have a perfectly stylish sofa, with a gorgeous exposed wood leg. But with a simple flip, it gives you a full queen-sized mattress for all your overnight crashers, while remaining sleek and stylish.

Don’t have the space for a full pull-put (or flip-over) sleeper couch, but still need a space for the unexpected overnighter? Well, there’s an option for that too! There are small, simple benches and daybeds for casual lounging, like this one from CB2. With a simple flick, it becomes another bed, giving you a comfy place for sleeping (or taking a nap). With designs like these, gone are the days of the clunky, bulky pull out couches, and all their metal levers for your fingers to get jammed in.
