Bright Ideas | Unique Lamps

Lighting is the key to any good design. It can really set the tone of a space, and make or break a good design. Everyone knows that I love livable art, so who says your table lamps can’t be pieces of artwork that service double duty as well?! Here are a few artists that do just that!

Michael & George created a product line of “Stationary Objects” to create unique and functional pieces for your home. Their philosophy to the collection was “With a whimsical approach to reimagining everyday objects, the range captured the world’s imagination with their products.” And I think they’ve been successful with that goal! My personal favourites are the HB Lamp, and its smaller mate the Drew the Pencil Lamp. This would be the perfect little (or big) addition to any kids room or play room to really inspire and get those little creative juices flowing. And the fun doesn’t stop with the unique look of the lamp; you can actually use the cord to doodle on your floor and walls. Because the cord comes out of the tip of the led, it really does look like you’ve drawn that fabulous pattern yourself.

OWL – located in Lisbon, Portugal – makes the most adorable and unique animal DIY lamps out of paper. Because they’re a DIY kit that includes everything you need to create your new little creature, you get to create a very intricate yet simple origami lamp of your very own. With so many different sizes, colours, and animals available you’re sure to find the right fit for you. Who wouldn’t want a paper owl or turtle or penguin to light their way? Add one or a small collection of them to any kids space, and you’ve instantly added kid-friendly art. “Inspired by the origami art of folding paper figures, we combine modelling with illumination to design original papercraft lamps. Whether your OWL paperlamp is lit or turned off, it will certainly be an eye catcher.”

It’s no secret by now that I love to incorporate nature into my designs as much as I can, and whenever I can. I have tried to add some small plants into my home in the past, but since there is such little natural light that comes in they usually end up dying sadly. Lightovo may have the perfect solution for me with the Milo and the Milo Baby. This simple lamp combines the trend of adding terrariums to your home, while also serving it’s purpose of a lamp. But it isn’t just a lamp for your to enjoy, it’s also a light for your little green friend to enjoy during those winter months when we rarely see the sun. “Milo is an interior lamp which was created to show, how to slow down in daily noise and in a welter of duties. A plant put on a pedestal to celebrate its presence, bring us closer to nature, teach us how to be more sensitive for plant’s needs. Beyond the exposition, Milo gives an extra light to the plants and help to enjoy their beauty during ‘darker’ seasons.” I for one believe that this lamp would be a great addition to anyone’s home or space.

DiMO Lamp is one of the most interesting new takes on a lamp that I’ve seen in a while. And talk about creating your own perfect mood lighting! “I started working on a series of lamps, and experimented in order to see how I can “draw” and “capture” light, and if I can “compress” and “expand” it. The idea came from watching the way a syringe works, and then I replaced the liquid with light, which brought exactly what I was looking for, a surprising result to the table, and then Dimo was born.” I love this innovative and out of the box thinking of creating a fluid light source that you can adjust depending on your mood or your activity. Unfortunatly the Kick Starter campaign for this lamp was cancelled, but I for one sure hope that it comes back with great success!

It seems like today, everything you can possible imagine is modular. Which means you get to create the custom piece you want without necessarily having the custom price tag attached to it. You can have modular sofas, modular desk and work surface, modular media units, and now you can even have modular lamps. The best part about this concept is that it allows you to expand, grow, and adjust, as you need to as your life and needs change. With the D-TWELVE lamp, you can really let your creativity run wild with the endless possibilities and options this lamp has available. You can make it grow, use it as a simple table lamp, make it hang as a unique chandelier, or even have it climb across your wall. “Explore the infinite ways of using the first modular, versatile and customizable handmade LED lamp.”

We all know the old phrase “shoot for the moon – if you miss you’ll end up in the stars”. Well now with the Luna Lamp from Acorn Studio, you can really have the moon right in your own home. “It's the design decor that turns your space into a magical world. It's the lamp that lightens up your favorite reading corner. You decide what Luna is, and how you want to make your life prettier with it.” With seven different sizes ranging from 3” to 24” and the ability to adjust your mood lighting, who wouldn’t want to take the moon to bed with them?
