Trends | 2016 Fall Colours

With the start of October, we are well into the start of Fall. Which means the leaves starting to change colours, cooler nights, warmer sweaters, lattes in the park, and sipping hot chocolate curled up in bed with a good book. But the start of a new season also means new colour trends to mix into your home and fashion designs. Without fail, Pantone has us covered with their ten new colours for Fall.

“The desire for tranquility, strength, and optimism have inspired a Fall colour palette that is led by the Blue family. Along with anchoring earth tones, exuberant pops of vibrant colours also appear throughout the collections. Transcending gender, these unexpectedly vivacious colours in our Fall 2016 palette act as playful but structured departures from your more typical fall shades. Blue skies represent constancy as they are always above us. Grays give a feeling of stability, Red tones invited confidence and warmth, while the hot Pinkish Purples and Spicy Mustard Yellows suggest a touch of the exotic.”

Even with such a bold and dramatic moody blue like Riverside, the space can still be simple and relaxing. By leaving everything in the space white, the upholstered headboard and footboard in this dramatic blue adds just the right amount of sophistication. Adding a little tufting to both the headboard and footboard adds just a touch of necessary elegance.

“Earmarking the importance of Blue in the palette, the new blue shade of PANTONE 17-4028 Riverside undeniably takes precedence in the fall collections. Cool and calming, strong and stable; displays a subtle vibrancy and sophistication; borders on exciting, yet; maintains a sense of constancy”

I love the choice of adding the accent colour to the closet doors and everything else from the walls, to the floors, to the bedding remaining neutral. The soft blue hue is the perfect colour to do just that, since it’s still very soft and doesn’t add too much drama against the rest of the otherwise neutral bedroom.

“PANTONE 14-4122 Airy Blue’s lofty nature evokes feelings of lightness and freedom. Designers seeking weightlessness in a world heavy with conflict; blue tones appear in nearly half of the designs; Airy Blue nods to Serenity; pair Airy Blue with Lush Meadow, Taupe or Dusty Cedar for fresh approach.”

Who doesn’t love a good grey? To me grey is the perfect neutral base to build on, it’s not too dark and not too light, it’s just right! This bathroom is so perfectly balanced with the warm rustic wood flooring, paired perfectly with the cool modern grey subway tiled walls.

“There’s an edge to PANTONE 17-3914 Sharkskin, and yet it manages to remain neutral. Pair-able with almost any fall colour, bright or muted; a colour that the rest of the palette can literally and theoretically rest on; and showcases practicality through a dependable but contemporary lens.”

Hello drama! What would the Fall colours be without the quintessential Autumn colour; red. This bedroom is oozing with drama, but at the same time very simple. One of the best ways to work with such a dramatic colour is to keep things monochromatic so there isn’t too much going on for your eyes to take in. Everything is so well balanced with this dramatic deep red tone on the wall and mimicked on the bedding, but taken down a little with the cool greys and bright whites.

“In contract to the stable backbone of the Fall 2016 palette, PANTONE 18-1550 Aurora Red adds a welcome punch. A bold Red that is warm, sensual and immediately pleasing to the eye; gets the metaphorical blood of the palette pumping; exciting and dynamic, and breeds unmistakable confidence.”

A beautiful, airy, and fresh kitchen with touches of Warm Taupe found in the natural wicker dining chairs. A very transitional space that can easily go from traditional to contemporary with a few small tweaks. More Warm Taupe and natural elements are found with the wood shelves, which provide even more storage in such a modern and trendy way by displaying some of your favourite items.

“PANTONE 16-1318 Warm Taupe is a hearty, pleasing and approachable neutral that pairs well with each of the top 10 shades of the Fall 2016 season. Suggests reassurance and stability; trusted, organic and grounded; departs slightly from the foundations of the Fall 2016 palette; timeless.”

This throwback to primary colour combo is the best way to show off this Dusty Cedar hue. It’s also a great example of this Fall’s colour collection, because it combines the warm shades with the cooler tones to make each of them pop even more. Everything is brought down with the simple off-white walls, that also adds a little maturaty to this otherwise whimsical colour palette.

“Like Airy Blue, PANTONE 18-1630 Dusty Cedar gives a nod to the PANTONE colour of the year 2016, Rose Quartz. A fall and winter version of the Pinks we’re used to seeing in spring; dustier rose-tones Pink shade with some complexity; exudes warmth and welcome.”

I am such a big fan of this bold, fully saturated green hue. So luscious and dramatic, especially paired with a classic black and white stripe wall treatment, ghost chairs, marble tulip table, and a simple yet modern gold pendant to top it all of. This green is the perfect colour for Fall, since all our green outside is disappearing why not bring it inside with this bold hue.

“PANTONE 18-5845 Lush Meadow brings in mind fresh botanicals and foliage. Rich and elegant, vibrant and sophisticated; this shade displays a brightness, panache and depth of colour that elevates it from more natural green; elevates the overall elegance woven through this season’s collections.”

What a fun way to add a punch of colour to your space. Why not paint the inside of the door for a little surprise? Yellow is such a lovely, warm colour that really puts a smile on your face. At least it puts one on my face! It’s just the right amount of colour to add a pop to any space.

“Bounces elegantly off other colours in the palette, PANTONE 14-0952 Spicy Mustard is an exotic addition. Adds another splash of uplifting vibrancy; a spicier, zestier Yellow than previous; unexpected and unusual; comes through in both the abstract and geometric accents that designers employed.”

The layering in this bedroom is so on point! From the old rustic reclaimed window frames as the headboard, to the different sizes and coloured pillows, and finally with the velvety blankets draping the bed. All including hints of the orange-brown neutral for this season. I just want to dive right in with my hot chocolate and book!

“PANTONE 18-1340 Potter’s Clay has an added degree of sophistication and layering. Elements of russet Orange in its undertones, gives a grounded feeling that’s anything but flat; neutral earth tone; expected for fall and winter palette; a shade with real substance; a strong foundation.”

I can’t get enough of how girly this space is! Necklaces displayed as art, retro upholstered chairs in this truly Bodacious colour, all pulled together with an area rug in a slightly muted tone of the same purple. This colour definitely adds tons of vibrancy to the Fall colour collection.

“PANTONE 17-3240 Bodacious speaks to the gender fluidity we continue to see. Lends itself to vibrant colour combinations; unexpected in fall; versatile; can be used with Pinks and Reds; bright, rich Purple, with hints of a more sophisticated Pink; turns fashion accents into fashion statements.”
